Michigan House unanimously approves Rep. Glenn’s measure lowering penalties for certain farm vehicle violations
RELEASE|April 26, 2021

The Michigan House recently approved Rep. Annette Glenn’s plan to reduce penalties for certain minor violations involving the use of farm vehicles.

House Bill 4150 was approved by a unanimous and bipartisan 108-0 vote last week.

Glenn’s bill relates to special vehicle registrations for trucks and tractors used to transport farm crops, fertilizer or other materials between fields and their storage locations. Vehicles with these special registrations should only be used for these farm-related purposes.

Violations are now classified as misdemeanors which could result in costly court appearances and possibly even jail time. Glenn’s plan would reclassify violations to civil infractions punishable by no more than fines of up to $150.

“This is common-sense legislation that has broad, bipartisan support for good reason,” said Glenn, R-Midland. “A civil infraction would be a far more reasonable punishment for these sorts of infractions. It’s important that the punishment fits the offense, and this decriminalization package is a step in the right direction.”

Glenn’s measure is part of a broader plan that also would reclassify certain fishing, hunting and snowmobiling violations from misdemeanors to civil infractions.

House Bill 4150 advances to the Senate for consideration.
