A bipartisan plan introduced by state Rep. Steve Frisbie (R-Pennfield) to update and expand sales tax exemptions for charitable fundraising cleared the Michigan House Finance Committee on Tuesday. House Bill 5318 would modernize Michigan’s charitable fundraising tax exemptions to reflect inflation and rising costs, helping schools, churches, hospitals, veteran groups, and nonprofit organizations raise more money to serve local communities.

Rep. Frisbie shared his thoughts following the governor’s State of the State address. A staunch advocate for Calhoun County families, Frisbie said Gov. Whitmer’s plans to address increased costs of living, particularly property taxes, are welcome but need to go farther.

“I was pleased to hear the governor recognize that property taxes must be reduced, but her plan is too small and targeted” he said. “We must take more meaningful steps to make the American Dream of homeownership more affordable in Michigan.”
