Rep. Schmaltz: CCAC secures grant to help Jackson County students stay on track
RELEASE|July 28, 2025

State Rep. Kathy Schmaltz today announced the College and Career Access Center (CCAC) of Jackson has earned a $6,000 Summer Melt Grant from the Michigan College Access Network to support local students as they transition from high school to college.

The grant will help the CCAC implement programs that prevent “summer melt,” a common issue where students who intend to go to college after graduation fail to enroll in the fall. Through this funding, the CCAC will provide additional support to ensure students follow through with their plans and are ready for success in college and beyond.

“Too many students get all the way to the finish line — applying to and being accepted into college — only to lose momentum during the summer months,” said Schmaltz, R-Jackson. “This grant will make a real difference in helping local students stay on course and pursue the futures they’ve worked so hard to earn.”

The Summer Melt Grant, made possible by state funding and the Michigan College Access Network’s philanthropic partners, will allow the CCAC to develop, staff, and evaluate targeted outreach programs aimed at increasing college enrollment among local graduates.

“Our community is incredibly fortunate to have a resource like the College and Career Access Center,” Schmaltz said. “They’re on the ground every day supporting students, empowering families, and helping build a stronger future for Jackson. I’m thrilled to see their work recognized and supported with this grant.”
