The Michigan House of Representatives today adopted a resolution introduced by state Rep. Josh Schriver (R-Oxford) encouraging local sheriffs and law enforcement agencies across the state to enter into 287(g) agreements with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The resolution aims to increase cooperation between state and federal authorities to remove individuals who are in the country illegally and pose a threat to Michigan communities.

House Resolution 128 supports broader participation in the federal 287(g) program, which empowers local officers to perform immigration law enforcement functions under the supervision of ICE — including identifying and processing criminal aliens and gang members for removal.

Schriver said the resolution sends a clear message that Michigan will not tolerate sanctuary-style obstruction and stands on the side of law-abiding citizens.

“This is about making sure we all play our part — state by state — in achieving what the federal government was elected to do: enforce our borders and remove dangerous individuals who are here illegally,” Schriver said. “Our communities deserve the full protection of the law, and this resolution is a necessary step to help deliver it.”

Participation in the 287(g) program is voluntary for local agencies. The resolution highlights the success of departments like the City of Taylor Police, which already entered into a 287(g) Task Force Model agreement and set an example for effective collaboration.

House Resolution 128 was adopted with strong Republican support.
